Back in the old days, before there were web sites, Desert Heart Multimedia was Desert Heart Recordings. We were a commercial recording studio, and in fact, our offices are still inside that recording studio. All the microphones, recording gear, and instruments are still here, and we still use them. So when it comes to audio for the web, we know a thing or two.
Audio and video present special challenges on the web, because they require large files, demanding long download times. To work around this, a technology has been developed called "streaming". When an audio or video file "streams", it begins to play almost immediately, and continues to play as it is being downloaded. This is a good thing for impatient Web users. Otherwise, they might have to wait minutes to see a movie!
However, faster may still not mean better, as the quality of streaming media is greatly dependent upon one's internet connection. For the user with a modem, audio and video quality is marginal at best. It can be used to play a song, lecture or radio show with "scratchy" quality; or show a movie in a small window, with jerky motion or ragged images. Users with fast DSL or cable modems can experience much better quality from streaming AV.
