EDITORIAL PRODUCT & STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY IN SANTA FE, NM

Editorial product and still-life photography is about photographing objects in support of a story. These images are created for magazines, newspapers, and online publications, where the purpose is not simply to sell a product, but to help illustrate an article, feature, or idea.
Assignments may involve everyday items, curated props, books, clothing, tools, or other found objects photographed simply on white or in minimal environments. The emphasis is on clarity, visual interest, and images that work well with text and layout rather than glossy advertising treatments.
Selected Assignment: National Magazine Feature
A recent assignment for The Atlantic magazine involved photographing a collection of thrifted objects and props on a natural white background to support a feature story. The objects were already in Santa Fe, and the brief called for straightforward, readable images rather than high‑gloss advertising work.
Over the course of a long weekend, I photographed and delivered more than 60 images, including multiple angles and groupings, with a firm deadline the following Monday. Clear communication with the photo editor around background treatment, reflectivity, and image selection kept the process smooth and on schedule.

Step-by-Step Lighting Techniques

Here’s the basic shot, with the statue on a reflective black surface, with one key-light. Reflective surfaces reflect everything around them. The key to shiny product photography is controlling what gets reflected, and what doesn’t.

One spotlight was added to bring out Shiva, below Kali’s feet. You can see that I hadn’t yet erased the spotlight arm from the image. The subject is still a bit dark at this point, to leave room for additional lighting.

Colored spotlights are added—orange and blue for dramatic effect. One backlight/rim light was also included to create a bit of separation from the background. Here I’m using the Adaptalux system of very small, focused lights, designed for macro photography and small objects. So, five lights in all, including the key light and four small lights.
Creative Post-Production

Here’s the post production work on this editorial product photography shot. I sourced and underlaid images of fire, smoke, and Sanskrit text. Then I adjusted their color to match the statue. Finally I did a bit of cleanup on some of the highlights, bringing down the shine on Kali’s face and arms. On the statue her knife is silver, with red for blood. It’s best not to mess with Kali, unless you want your ego slaughtered!
