An Editorial Product Shot – The Transformation Process

“In this shoot I transformed a straight forward shot of this bronze Kali statue into a feature image for a magazine article.” – Max Highstein

Here’s the basic shot, with the statue on a reflective black surface, with one key-light. In this case, it happened to be the top of the grand piano in my multi-purpose studio. Reflective surfaces reflect everything around them. The key to shiny product photography is controlling what gets reflected, and what doesn’t.

One spotlight was added to bring out Shiva, below Kali’s feet. You can see that I hadn’t yet erased the spotlight arm from the image. The subject is still a bit dark at this point, to leave more room for additional lighting.

Colored spotlights are added—orange and a blue for dramatic effect. One backlight/rim light was also included to create a bit of separation from the background. Here I’m using the Adaptalux system of very small, focused lights, designed for macro photography and small objects. So, five lights in all, including the key light and four small lights.

Here’s the post production work on this editorial product photography shot. I sourced and underlaid images of fire, smoke, and Sanskrit text. Then I adjusted the color to match the statue. Finally I did a bit of cleanup on some of the highlights, bringing down the shine on Kali’s face and arms. On the statue her knife is silver, with red for blood. It’s best not to mess with Kali, unless you want your ego slaughtered.
